Upgrading VCSA from 6.0u3 to 6.5u1

Final Notes

Additional information / useful links in vCenter

Something to note is that you can no longer access vCenter using the C# client (aka Fat Client), however, you can use VMware workstation to connect to the vCenter(s) and manage it from there, but not this is incredibly limited.

The flash based client is still full featured (e.g. supports additional extension and plugins), but there is no more development happening on this product.

The HTML5 Client (which is referred to has vSphere Client) is where the folks at VMware are headed.

Platform Services Controller:

  • https://<psc_fqdn_or_ip> (Root URL of the PSC)
  • https://<psc_fqdn_or_ip>/psc (This is to manage the PSC and you would need to login with SSO credentials)
  • https://<psc_fqdn_or_ip>:5480 (This is the vCenter Appliance Management Interface. To manage this you would need to login using the root credentials)

vCenter Server:

  • https://<vc_fqdn_or_ip> (Root URL of the vCenter)
  • https://<vc_fqdn_or_ip>/vsphere-client (This is to access the FLASH BASED Web Client, which will soon be a thing of the past (YAY!) and you would need to login with SSO/AD Domain credentials)
  • https://<vc_fqdn_or_ip>/ui (This is to access the HTML5 Web Client, which is the FUTURE! (WOOT!) and you would need to login with SSO/AD Domain credentials)
  • https://<vc_fqdn_or_ip>:5480 (This is the vCenter Appliance Management Interface. To manage this you would need to login using the root credentials)

This was a fantastic series! Thank you for the detail and full context of the steps for a project of this sort.

One thing I ran into is when the stage 1 deployment created the new VCSA VM. It was unable to set some VM property, but had no idea which one. It went through and completed Stage 1 but it failed moving to Stage 2 because the migration couldn’t contact the new VCSA. The issue was that the vNIC was not set as connected.

What was nice is that the migration application gave me the appliance link where I could manually kick off the Stage 2 portion of the migration. It worked without issue and was a mirror of what the migration would have presented. In fact, it worked a lot faster through the browser.
